PhpMyAdmin 5.0.2. Released 2020-03-21, see release notes for details. Current version compatible with PHP 7.1 and newer and MySQL 5.5 and newer. Steps to set up PhpMyAdmin on you MacOS. Download from Go to setup from the browser with your user. To install and run it on Mac OS download offline installer setup. It is an easy to install Apache distribution for Mac OS X. The package for Mac is similar to windows. It includes the Apache web server, MySQL, PHP, Perl, an FTP server and phpMyAdmin. XAMPP is no doubt a complete package with an easy and simple method to install.
On Mac it kinda needs a bit of work but basically you have to configure PHP, download-install MySQL and phpMyAdmin. I wrote a short tutorial below to cover the installation. Mac OS X Snow Leopard includes PHP 5.3.x version by default, you simply need to enable it to start using it.
How it all started: I was logged in to phpMyAdmin on my Macbook (which runs Mac OS X v10.7.4). I saw the message advising me to change the password of root, which by default has no password. I went to the Manage Privileges tab and changed the password for root on localhosts, webdev and 127.0.0.1.
XAMPP is quite attractive package for Mac users, because of it being Lightweight software, simpler GUI and inclusion of Number of tools/ features with it. This is a complete package which is easy to easy install, configure and run. Also it requires minimum configuration for installation. Though there are other packages too for Mac for developing a local server like MAMP. As WAMP is for Windows, similarly MAMP is for Mac, but it is for all Windows, Mac and Linux.
Before going into installation you need to download the version of dmg file which suits your system configuration. And before doing that you should have Mac OS X and you should log in as administrator in terminal.
Now, prepare yourself for downloading and installing XAMPP properly on your system. The guide below will help you with all installation steps and launching application with the help of snaps in detail. Read Download XAMPP page for more detail and overview about the package.
